What is Herbal Viagra?

There are many drugs on the market for treating impotence. But some people prefer to take a more holistic, or natural approach to health concerns. Luckily, there are some herbal and natural treatments available to treat erectile dysfunction. Herbal Viagra

Typical ingredients in herbal Viagra pills include:

Ingredients and Side effects of Herbal Viagra pills

            L-Arginine

L-arginine is an amino acid that plays a role in many activities throughout the body. Arginine is necessary for:

  • The healing of wounds
  • Waste excretion from the kidneys
  • Relaxation and dilation of the arteries, which it the reason it is used for impotence treatments.
  • Proper hormone and immune function

Arginine also plays a role in cardiovascular health as well. When in the body, Arginine in converted into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a neurotransmitter that controls relaxation of the smooth muscle in blood vessels, which in turn affects circulation. Blood flow in the arteries of the heart can even be affected by Arginine, which can relieve symptoms of cardiovascular disease. When blood flow is improved in the body, it is easier to achieve and maintain a firm erection upon sexual arousal, thus curing impotence. L-Arginine is a naturally occurring amino acid, so there are no side effects or drug interaction that may react badly with it. Amino acids are building blocks to our existence.

Horny Goat Weed

Epimedium, also known as Horny goat weed, is a traditional Chinese herb used to treat disorders of pain, libido, erectile dysfunction, and even fatigue. Studies show that Horny Goat Weed contains a compound that inhibits the enzyme that inhibits blood flow to the genitals. Basically, Horny Goat Weed is a Phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor just like Viagra, but it is natural and lacks the side effects. The ideal amount of epimedium to use is between 6 and 15 grams per day. Unfortunately, there are no foods that naturally contain Horny goat weed.

Side effects: Side effects of epimedium may include upset stomach and possibly dry mouth. The side effects are not as harsh or bothersome as Viagra or even generic Viagra. If you take too much, the side effect can become more severe and lead to low blood pressure, respiratory failure, spasms, and irregular heartbeat.

Drug-Herb interactions: It is always best to clear any new supplements with your doctor! Horny Goat weed can turn bad very quickly for men who are also taking something for one or more of the following medications/ treatments:

  • Antidepressants
  • Blood thinners
  • Containing Nitroglycerin
  • High blood pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Thyroid issues

Yohimbine

Yohimbine is an indole alkaloid from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree. This tree is native to Central Africa. Yohimbine has many uses due to its properties as a stimulatnt. It is often used to reverse sedation in dogs and deer. Yohimbine is also a known aphrodisiac that plays a role in treating erectile dysfunction. Yohimbine increases the level of adrenaline in the body.

Side Effects: Yohimbine has the tendency to raise and lower blood pressure to dangerous level if taken in too high of a dosage. High dosages of Yohimbine can have several adverse effects, it is important to keep the dosage small to avoid more problems than you began with.

 Panax Ginseng

Panax Ginseng, also known as Korean or Asian Ginseng, is an herbal supplement use to cure impotence, improving immune system strength, and even help with depression. Panax Ginseng has been linked to boosting cognitive function in middle-aged adults and adults suffering from dementia. Ginseng has been used for hundreds of years in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It is believed to increase sexual desire and produce a stronger and longer lasting erection. A study conducted in 2008 concluded that Ginseng can help improve sexual arousal and the erection to match. I was also linked to alleviating symptoms of depression in women.  Panax Ginseng grows in Russia, Northeast China, and Korea. It is usually ingested by mouth, but it can also be topically applied to the penis as a deterrent for premature ejaculation. The recommendation for treating erectile dysfunction is 1400 to 2700 mg taken each day for about 12 weeks. The 1400 to 2700 mg should be broken up into two or three doses spread throughout the day.

Side Effects: Not very many side effects have been documented for this herb. Here are the one that have been documented:

  • Sleeping troubles
  • Increased heart rate
  • Low or high blood pressure

Rhodiola rosea

Rhodiola rosea, also known as Arctic root, is an adaptogen that has been used in Herbal Chinese medicine for many years This plant usually grows in the arctic parts of Europe as well as Asia and Alaska. It is the second most popular adaptogen next to Panax Ginseng. The herb is typically used for its anti-fatigue properties and for treating erectile dysfunction. Rhodiola rosea is able to reduce fatigue associated with stress. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of scientific evidence of effects and extent of effectiveness. There have been a few studies over the years, but nothing has been conclusive yet. Rhodiola rosea has been used in several different treatments such as:

  • Cancer
  • TB
  • Diabetes
  • Liver damage
  • Hearing
  • Nervous system
  • Immune system

Side Effects: Side effects are not really known.

Schisandra

Schisandra is a berry that is used in food, but also for a number of medicinal reasons. Schisandra is an adaptogen and has been linked to helping increase sexual endurance, energy, and even sexual performance.

This berry should NOT be taken if you have any of the following health concerns:

  • Epilepsy, because Schisandra stimulates the Central Nervous System
  • GERD, because Schisandra may increase stomach acid content
  • High intercranial pressure, because Schisandra stimulates the Central Nervous System.

Drug interactions

You should not take this berry if you are taking any medications that are broken down by the liver. The medication and the Schisandra may interfere with each other and cause serious side effects.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)

DHEA is a naturally occurring hormone in the body, produced in the adrenal glands. This hormone has the ability to convert to estrogen AND testosterone. DHEA hits a peak in your 20’s and then begins to decrease gradually with age. There is not a ton of scientific evidence supporting the claim that DHEA can produce better erections. However, a study from 2009 reported that patients with erectile dysfunction displayed low levels of DHEA and men with higher levels of DHEA reported success in getting and keeping a firm erection. Research is still being conducted into the effect of DHEA and how this hormone can play a role in a number of age-related changes in the body.

Side Effects: Side effects of DHEA include, but are not limited to:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Stuffy or Runny nose
  • Insomnia
  • Low or High Cholesterol levels
  • Thickening of the skin
  • Oiliness of the skin

Why choose the herbal route?

Herbal Viagra is less regulated than the pharmaceutical drugs and sometimes gets a bad reputation because of all the fraudulent products being put out. Many of these drugs have several, even hundreds of undisclosed ingredients that could turn fatal with the wrong combination. The other issue with herbal Viagra is the dosage. Many men end up buying and taking extremely high doses of these supplements, which is very dangerous and potentially fatal.

Viagra is extremely expensive in the United States, but not so much everywhere else. For example, Viagra in China is dirt cheap. To put it in perspective, 30 pills of 100 mg Viagra costs around 2,000 here in the U.S. In China, 30 pills of 100 mg Viagra costs $60.84 or $2.03 per pill. This price difference is the reason Chinese herbal Viagra can thrive in the United States. Herbal Viagra is even cheaper than online generic Viagra!
